Germany has scaled back its ambitions for new gas fired capacity to 12GW, landing on a slimmer and more defensible design after a year spent chasing targets that Brussels was never going to approve. The shift raises an awkward question for Berlin: was economy & energy minister Katherina Reiche’s (CDU) push for a 20GW gas generation expansion, only for the government to settle on a compromise that sits far closer to the approach drafted by her Green predecessor Robert Habeck, simply a waste of time?
