France to drill for hydrogen ‘gold’ in world-first project

In the abandoned coal mines of northeastern France, geologists made a discovery that could reshape Europe’s energy landscape. What began in 2023 as a research project to measure methane trapped in old coal seams has led to the first-ever confirmation of significant volumes of natural hydrogen, also known as “white” or “gold” hydrogen, dissolved in water deep underground.
