In the latest inspiratia podcast episode documenting the energy transition, we place the spotlight on the developing situation around grid inertia – or more specifically the decreasing amounts of it in electricity systems

inspiratia recently sat down with a trio of leading voices in the energy industry to discuss how the decreasing inertia in electricity grids as a result of declining fossil-fuelled generation can create implications for effectively managing grid frequency.

The increasing share of wind and solar power in electricity generation cannot replace the inertia lost through the mothballing of thermal plants and so other solutions are being sought.

National Grid ESO - the operator charged with balancing electricity supply and demand in the UK - has begun procuring services to help it manage the situation better.

In this podcast, we chat about these moves, and more, with Chris Kimmett from Reactive Technologies, Matt Brown from ÅF Pöyry Management Consulting, and Guy Ranawake from Ingenious.
