The UK government's proposal for voluntary Wholesale Contracts for Difference (WCfD) represents the most significant intervention in legacy renewable assets since the Renewables Obligation (RO) closed in 2017. Marketed as a measure to “break the link” between gas and electricity prices, the proposal will be tested on whether it can lower consumer electricity bills without weakening investor confidence.
