Renewable generation now regularly exceeds 50% of the UK's electricity mix, and the variability that accompanies it cannot be managed through supply alone. Flexibility capacity has grown fourfold since 2022, and a further step-change is required by 2030. The virtual power plant (VPP) is the mechanism being built to close that gap, and the questions now are who will build it, who will pay, and what still stands in the way.
