The fight over the UK's future has begun

The Labour Party’s leadership crisis has arrived at a difficult moment for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The Health Secretary Wes Streeting has today [14 May 2026] resigned from government, firing the starting gun on a leadership contest, a week on from elections that exposed a government losing support in several directions at once. Reform UK is advancing from the right, the Greens are pressuring Labour from the left, and Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National Party are squeezing the party out of Wales and Scotland.
